Altas Auto, Europe’s leading minibus manufacturer, needed a safe way to bring AI into the business without losing control of sensitive engineering, commercial and operational data. Today, teams across the company are building their own AI agents on a private platform - and a peer-driven “AI Garage” community keeps adoption moving from the shop floor to the executive suite.
Altas Auto has spent more than 20 years building high-quality mini and midi buses - including electric and specialised vehicles - for customers across 18 European markets. Like most manufacturers today, its people had started reaching for public AI tools on their own. For a business that runs on engineering knowledge, homologation data, commercial pricing and customer information, that was not a workable long-term posture. What Altas Auto needed was not a ban on AI - it was a safe way to bring AI into the business, on the company’s own terms.
The initiative was led by the company’s Head of IT, with a clear objective: eliminate shadow AI first, then open a governed path to real adoption across business processes. Public AI tools solved the curiosity problem for individual employees but could not be trusted with engineering documentation, commercial offers, homologation records or aftersales data. They also did not reach into the systems where the real work lived - SharePoint, Odoo, internal databases. A private, governed platform was the only viable next step.
The Moterra Business AI Suite as a private AI platform inside Altas Auto’s own cloud environment, integrated with Microsoft 365, SharePoint and Entra ID - with SharePoint set as the single source of truth for internal knowledge, and Microsoft Admin Center groups as the single source of truth for access. On top of that, teams received Agent Builder, so each department can create its own agents on the same secure platform. Rather than a handful of Moterra-built assistants, Altas Auto has grown its own portfolio.
Moterra is currently rolling out Claude Cowork and Claude Code alongside the platform, giving developers and workflow builders a direct path to agentic workflows.
The most visible impact is on the work itself: engineering information retrieval in aftersales and drafting of work specifications, both previously measured in hours, now take minutes. The more strategic result is a shift in how AI shows up at Altas Auto. Instead of a handful of top-down assistants, more than 20 agents are now live - most built by the teams that use them. Adoption is driven by peers rather than policy: Altas Auto set up an internal “AI Garage”, a cross-functional community of AI enthusiasts that started with frequent hands-on sessions and now meets quarterly to build, test and share what is working. Members take those lessons back into their departments.
It is how a bus manufacturer builds AI muscle the same way it builds vehicles: hands-on, iteratively, and by the people who know the work. The foundations are now in place for the next phase - agentic workflows across production quality, commercial operations and executive decision-making.
